Artist's Statement

My current work reflects an abiding fascination with mid-century Italian glass design, especially the work of such seminal figures as Archimedes Seguso. The process of creating pattern and adding visual textures through the use of various cane techniques is a constantly escalating technical challenge. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to study with teachers whose own work lies close to these sources.

The application of that those techniques and the aim of intelligently innovating upon that basic knowledge, has to been to use pattern and repetition in a vessel format to explore ideas of control and chaos in a graphic manner. The grid that underlies all of the patterns forms a basic structure--the physical structure of the tiles that make up the body of the vessel--while the fractured and reassembled patterns create a tension between that order and a scrambled, random reinterpretation of that order. For the viewer, the order is not immediately apparent in the syncopated visual rhythms, but rather sensed as a mechanism that emphasizes the unity of the form.
